The show must go on for the Scarborough Baseball Association as it prepares to host the provincial women's baseball championships this weekend despite for the first time not having a team of its own.

Too few turned out this spring to form a women's side in Scarborough, says tournament organizer Glen Rose, who also oversees the thriving Toronto Baseball Association triple-A Stingers program.

"They did try to put a team together, but the numbers didn't warrant having one," he said. "Women's baseball in general has gone down considerably in Scarborough and Toronto."

In fact, Birchmount was the last surviving organization, he said, to provide programming to women in the area. That program was going strong around a decade ago but it died out a couple of years ago.

"The numbers just kept going down and down to the point where there was no one to play," he said.

Truth be told, the draw for the Ontario Baseball Association championships this weekend isn't anything spectacular either, which is a clear reflection of how the women's side of the game is doing in the province, he said.

Five teams have signed on to the double-knockout series, which the SBA has been bidding on and subsequently hosting for the last few years.

"But we're already in the works of putting together a team for next year," reassured Rose.

Randy Low, a Central Ontario Girls Baseball League executive and Scarborough resident, will head the Birchmount team in the spring.

"It's looking good. They've got coaches in place and are starting to recruit now."

The problem isn't so much at the younger age levels of recreational baseball, he said, but as kids grow, so grows the gap in talent between the boys and girls.

"Here there's girls playing house league at the younger divisions, but once they hit 12 or 13 they can't compete with the boys anymore, and there's not enough interest to create a girls' house league."

Burlington, Annette, Guelph, Royal York and Milton will all be represented at the OBA provincials in Scarborough this weekend.

Preliminary games will take place at Highview and Neilson parks.

The final is slated for Sunday afternoon at Neilson Park.
